ARBON SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

April 17, 2012

The Arbon School Board met on April 17, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. members Jason Williams, Jake Evans and Melinda Campbell via Skype were present as were Debbie Curry, Robin Claunch, Ryan Weston and clerk, Cheri Evans.

The motion was moved by Jason and seconded by Jake to approve the agenda after one addition. The motion was moved by Jason and seconded by Melinda to approve the minutes. The bills were reviewed. The motion was moved by Jason and seconded by Jake to approve them. The total M & O expenses for the month of April was $20,142.42. The school received $124.56 federal forest funds, $180.60 from property taxes, $1,500.00 REAP funds and $12.00 from interest on investments. The school M & O balance is $60,631.89. The Plant Facility received $3.99 from interest the Plant Facility balance is $33,432.07. The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jason to approve the financial statement.

The annual safety inspection was done on the school and playground. The school was not written up but these were concerns: need lock on outside mower shed, furnace room needs to be locked at all times, repair or replace see-saw seats or just remove completely and the playground dome needs to be moved.

Robin contacted American Falls School District to see it they have finalized a 2012-2013 school calendar, they have not. She presented the board with a tentative 2012-2013 school calendar. ISAT testing started last week and is going well. Shantell will complete the typing program the end of April. She will give the students a final exam for our Technology Grant file. The school has put a lot of money into the upstairs copier this year. The teachers will look for a new one. The end of year program is May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. The last day of school is May 24th; the school will go swimming at Lava. Julie Hayden will not be coming back as an aide for the 2012-2013 school year. Cheri will post the position opening.

The budget hearing date was set for June 12th at 7:00 p.m. The board needs to make policy on how parent input will be included on the teacher evaluations by September of 2012. The evaluations need to be completed before February of 2013. Blue Cross of Idaho medical insurance is increasing by 2.9%, the dental by 1.7% and no increase on vision.

Ryan thinks it will cost around $55.00 to redo the way the curtains close for the stage.

Jason had prepared a new teacher salary schedule; it was reviewed and approved. Jake will redo the power point on the bus driver contract and email it to the drivers. The State Department, Student Transportation Division, will do a random spot check on April 30th.

The next meeting will be held on May 8, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The motion was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

Approved 05-09-2012

As a tribute to our Mother Earth, the Arbon Elementary School decided to do something great for our community for Earth Day. On a beautiful sunny afternoon, the kids took a two mile journey (a mile down and a mile back), from the school to the post office picking up any and all litter on the sides of the highway. If you ever want to see some energy… follow along for this adventure! Ears were talked off… jokes were told… and of course as you can see by the photo, there was a lot of garbage picked up! It is amazing at how much litter can be in such a short distance! The running thing was, that those at the end, if there were any pieces of garbage found that was missed by the other kids, then they were owed a candy bar. I lost count on who had what tally, but it was kind of funny!

After picking up litter along the highway, the kids returned to the school… not for treats or snacks or some great reward, but to do more work! Yes, they created some flower beds by arranging bricks kept from the old cottage and filling it with dirt. Then they planted flowers of different kinds and some herbs. In the end, they did get to have some play time on the playground. Surprisingly to burn off some more energy!

I felt that it is important to post this article and give a great big THANK YOU to our Arbon Elementary School teachers, aids, and students for their great work on helping to better our community! It looks great!

It’s gone and there is no retrieval until the “powers that be” give it back. Friday night, April 27, it happened again. We didn’t fall into complete darkness this time and were even spared immediate biting cold seeping under the floor boards.

.
However, since no remnant of an outhouse survives in my neighborhood the call of don’t flush goes out. If you need a drink there’s water in the fridge. If we get desperate there are jugs of water in the basement. And if we get extremely desperate, there’s a creek across the street, a wood stove downstairs, and canned food in the cupboard. If all else fails I’ll go to town or even move into the trailer for the night, which would require some work and luck, hoping the batteries are charged and there’s propane in the tanks.

.
For right now we will just find the flashlights and candles, even if their main function is a pleasing scent. Oil lamps heavy with dust begin to glow only long enough to set up a gas lantern so one can actually read or save yourself from stumbling around in the dark.

.
Nobody wants to go to bed. Its not even 9 o’clock! We can’t do anything. It all takes electricity. We’re doomed. Inspiration – we can watch a movie on the laptop. Three people snuggle up on the couch. Snuggle, not really. First it was a battle over screen placement so every self-centered person has the best view. Then one eight year old needed to sit on the other side of Grandpa and finally he needs to sit in the middle and hold the laptop while secretly adjusting the buttons on the side, because he’s seen this video . No electricity is supposed to be an adventure, not spent staring into a laptop screen.

.
About an hour into the movie the laptop died. Now what? Ten p.m. was nearing so we gave up and went to bed. It’s a fact my life depends on the power of the plug, the outlet, and the line. I can’t wait until next time which will be in about three weeks but probably sooner.

The Arbon School Board met on March 20, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. members Jason Williams and Jake Evans were present as were Debbie Curry, Robin Claunch, Ryan Weston, Vance Ward, Larry Fitch, Nancy Fitch, Todd Fitch, Juli Fitch and clerk, Cheri Evans. Melinda Campbell tried to attend the meeting through Skype. We could hear her but she could not hear us.

The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jason to approve the agenda after one addition. The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jason to approve the minutes. The bills were reviewed. The motion was moved by Jason and seconded by Jake to approve them. The total M & O expenses for the month of March was $22,321.60. The school received $20,610.08 from the State Department, $55.00 refund and $12.00 from interest on investments. The school M & O balance is $78,957.93. The Plant Facility received $4.27 from interest the Plant Facility balance is $33,428.08. The motion was moved by Jason and seconded by Jake to approve the financial statement.

The board approved field trips to Twin Falls to the planetarium on March 23rd and on April 10th for pictures in American Falls and to the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls after.

Speech therapy has ended for this school year. The students will be re-assessed this fall. The board agreed that the teachers should attend a Total Instruction Alignment meeting, information on aligning our curriculum with the Common Core Standards, at ISU on April 25th and 26th. The cost is $400.00 which can be paid for with REAP funds. The teachers and clerk will attend the Post Legislative Tour meeting in Pocatello on April 11th.

Ryan would like to make an easier way to close the curtains for the stage, probably with a rope and pulley. Todd would like to mark a three-point line on the gym floor and replace the basketball nets. The board agreed and will reimburse for any supplies.

The board and bus drivers went over an analysis the board had prepared on paying by mileage instead of a monthly salary. The drivers brought up some concerns they had:

a. not being reimbursed for furnishing their own fuel tanks for fuel for the buses or using shop and own tools for minor repairs

b. the mileage and time it takes when the bus needs to be taken into American Falls or Pocatello for the annual inspections, tires or repairs – most of the time this takes two people

c. if the school gets reimbursed 50%-85% for the costs, will they really save that much

The drivers would like to see the contract stay at a monthly salary. No decisions were made. The board will address again.

The next meeting will be held on April 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The motion was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 p.m.
